Thousands of companies now market “AI agent” products. According to Gartner estimates cited by Machine Learning Mastery, roughly 130 of them are building systems that actually qualify as agentic — capable of autonomous goal-seeking, tool use, and multi-step reasoning. The rest are selling chatbots, workflow automations, and API wrappers with “agent” slapped on the landing page.
Welcome to agent washing. It’s the AI industry’s version of greenwashing, and it’s accelerating precisely because the money is flowing in this direction.
Where the Money Is Pointing
The agentic AI market is projected to grow from $7.8 billion to over $52 billion by 2030, according to MarketsandMarkets. Gartner predicts 40% of enterprise applications will embed AI agents by end of 2026, up from less than 5% in 2025. Separately, Gartner also projects that over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by end of 2027 — a stat that makes more sense when you realize how many of those “projects” are built on vendor products that aren’t doing anything genuinely new.
That $52 billion projection creates a gravitational pull. Every SaaS company with an LLM integration is repositioning as an “AI agent platform.” Every RPA vendor that spent 2024 calling itself “intelligent automation” is now calling itself “agentic.” The economic incentive to label products as agents — regardless of what they actually do — is enormous.
What Separates Real Agents From Marketing Agents
A genuine AI agent makes runtime decisions about how to accomplish a goal. It selects tools, plans sequences of actions, handles failures, and adapts when conditions change. OpenClaw does this. Claude Code does this. Systems built on frameworks like Microsoft’s Agent Framework or LangGraph can do this if properly architected.
A chatbot that calls an API when you ask it to summarize a document does not do this. A workflow automation that executes a fixed sequence of steps when triggered by a webhook does not do this. A Retrieval-Augmented Generation pipeline that fetches context and generates a response does not do this. These are all useful products. They are not agents.
The distinction matters because the failure modes are different. When a real agent goes wrong, it goes wrong in unpredictable ways — executing unintended actions, misinterpreting goals, accessing resources it shouldn’t. That’s why the enterprise security conversation around agents (NemoClaw, Abacus AI’s Secure OpenClaw, NIST’s new standards initiative) exists. When a rebranded chatbot goes wrong, it just gives a bad answer. The risk profile, and the appropriate response, are fundamentally different.
The Procurement Problem
Enterprise buyers are now trying to evaluate “AI agent” vendors without a shared definition of what that means. An IT procurement team evaluating five competing “agent platforms” may find that two of them are genuine multi-step autonomous systems and three are glorified workflow builders with an LLM attached.
The 130-out-of-thousands estimate suggests that for every legitimate agent vendor, there are dozens of imposters occupying the same search results, competing for the same budget line items, and muddying the evaluation criteria. Procurement teams without deep technical expertise — which is most of them — have no reliable way to distinguish between the two categories from a demo alone. A well-crafted demo of a fixed workflow can look identical to a demo of a genuinely autonomous agent.
The Correction Is Coming
Gartner’s prediction that 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by 2027 is the market’s way of correcting for agent washing. Companies will buy products marketed as agents, deploy them expecting autonomous behavior, discover they purchased sophisticated workflow automation, and cancel the project when ROI doesn’t match expectations.
This correction will be painful for buyers who invested budget and organizational change management on the premise of genuine autonomy. It will also damage trust in the legitimate agent category — a classic “boy who cried wolf” problem where real agent capabilities get dismissed because the first three vendors a buyer tried were faking it.
Who Benefits
The companies best positioned to survive the agent washing shakeout are the ones with publicly observable, verifiable agent behavior. Open-source projects like OpenClaw benefit from transparency — anyone can inspect what the agent actually does. Companies like Anthropic and OpenAI benefit from frontier model capabilities that are difficult to replicate with thin wrappers. Framework developers like Microsoft (Agent Framework) and Google (A2A protocol) benefit from standardization that makes agent capabilities more objectively measurable.
The losers will be the companies in the middle — too small to set standards, too opaque to prove their product is genuinely agentic, and too reliant on the “agent” label as a marketing differentiator rather than a technical descriptor.
For buyers, the best defense is specificity. Ask vendors to demonstrate autonomous tool selection (not pre-configured workflows), multi-step error recovery (not retry logic), and goal decomposition (not prompt chaining). If a vendor can’t show those capabilities running live against an unfamiliar task, what they’re selling may be useful — but it probably isn’t an agent.
