Anthropic will stop allowing Claude subscribers to use their subscription limits for third-party tools, including OpenClaw, starting April 4 at 3PM ET. The change, announced Friday evening by Anthropic’s Boris Cherny on X, moves all third-party usage to a separate pay-as-you-go billing system.
“Starting tomorrow at 12pm PT, Claude subscriptions will no longer cover usage on third-party tools like OpenClaw,” Cherny wrote. “You can still use these tools with your Claude login via extra usage bundles (now available at a discount), or with a Claude API key.”
The pricing change hits the single most popular way people use OpenClaw. The agent framework exploded in early 2026 because it could manage inboxes, calendars, and flight check-ins autonomously, as The Verge and Digital Trends reported. That usage relied heavily on Claude subscription credits. Under the new policy, those workflows will cost extra.
Steinberger Tried to Stop It
OpenClaw creator Peter Steinberger, who now works at OpenAI, said on X that he and OpenClaw board member Dave Morin “tried to talk sense into Anthropic, best we managed was delaying this for a week.” The implication: Anthropic’s original timeline was even faster.
Anthropic framed the change around infrastructure strain. “We’ve been working hard to meet the increase in demand for Claude, and our subscriptions weren’t built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools,” Cherny wrote. “Capacity is a resource we manage thoughtfully and we are prioritizing our customers using our products and API.”
To soften the transition, Anthropic is offering subscribers a one-time credit equal to their monthly plan cost and discounted usage bundles. Users who want a full refund can request one via a link in an email arriving April 4, according to The Verge.
The Pattern Is Clear
This is the third Anthropic action against OpenClaw access in under three weeks. On March 19, NCT reported that Anthropic appeared to be deprecating OAuth token access for third-party tools. On March 28, Anthropic tightened peak-hour session limits, with Claude Code executive Thariq Shihipar explicitly acknowledging that agent-driven compute demand was straining infrastructure.
The formal subscription cutoff follows both signals to their logical conclusion. And the strategic context is hard to ignore: just hours before this announcement, Semafor reported that Anthropic CCO Paul Smith confirmed enterprise customers are asking Anthropic to build an OpenClaw competitor. Anthropic is raising the cost of using OpenClaw with Claude while simultaneously building its own alternative.
What This Means for Builders
For OpenClaw operators who relied on Claude subscriptions as a flat-rate cost cap, the math just changed. A Claude Max subscription at $200/month provided effectively unlimited usage through OAuth tokens. The equivalent workload through pay-as-you-go API billing, where Claude 3.5 Sonnet charges $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, routinely exceeds $1,000/month for agents running continuous workflows.
The practical options: switch to pay-as-you-go and absorb the cost increase, move to API keys with direct billing, or evaluate alternative model providers. OpenClaw is model-agnostic, and the community has already documented setups running on providers like OpenAI, Google, and open-weight models via OpenRouter.
