At Gartner’s IAM Summit 2026, the clearest signal was not about human identity management. According to GitGuardian’s conference coverage, the strongest conversations centered on machine identities, AI agents, secrets, trusted integrations, and the growing realization that credential abuse now sits much closer to the center of enterprise risk than most security programs are designed to address.
The shift the summit described is straightforward: AI agents are being deployed faster than governance models are adapting. These systems read files, call APIs, use tools, access external services, and in some cases behave in ways that resemble privileged insiders more than software features. The credentials they acquire and use are often outside the visibility of the identity infrastructure that governs human access.
Multiple sessions at the summit documented environments where machine identities already outnumber human ones by orders of magnitude. The exact ratios varied by session, but the consistent point was that the number of non-human actors in enterprise environments is large, growing fast with AI-assisted development, and poorly governed relative to the access they hold.
The Taxonomy Problem
One Gartner session tackled a secondary problem that compounds the first: the identity management market is overloaded with overlapping terms. Non-human identity, workload identity, machine identity, service account, agent, credential. Vendors bundle these into broad claims that are hard to compare and harder to operationalize.
The framework presented at the summit distinguished between abstract digital identity constructs and the actual accounts and credentials that grant access. The practical security questions live at that lower level: where do credentials exist, how are they used, are they overprivileged, who owns them, and what is the blast radius when they are exposed.
AI agents fit into this taxonomy as a distinct control problem. According to Security Boulevard’s coverage, Gartner grouped agents in relation to other application and workload identity types while acknowledging they introduce governance challenges that standard approaches do not address cleanly. Specifically, local or browser-based agents were flagged as high-risk because they operate close to user environments and local data, outside the governance controls that apply to cloud-managed services.
Attackers Log In, They Do Not Break In
One of the clearest formulations from the summit: attackers no longer need to breach hardened infrastructure if valid credentials let them walk in. This observation predates AI agents in security circles. AI agents compound it: they generate, store, and use credentials in ways that most existing identity programs were not built to track.
The OpenClaw nine-CVE crisis published April 6 illustrated exactly this pattern. Many of the vulnerabilities that exposed 135,000 instances were failures at the credential and access control layer — the same layer the Gartner IAM Summit spent three days discussing — rather than brute-force intrusions.
The Governance Gap
The summit’s central finding for enterprise teams running agent stacks is not that AI agents are uniquely dangerous. It is that agent deployments are scaling faster than the identity programs designed to govern them. Organizations adding AI agents to workflows this year are likely adding credentials, secrets, API keys, and trusted integrations that no one currently has full visibility into.
The path forward the summit outlined: standardize where you can, reduce custom sprawl, and stop applying legacy governance patterns to environments that now operate at very different speeds and volumes.
