OpenAI and Snowflake announced a $200 million multi-year partnership on February 2, and as of March 6, GPT-5.4 is live inside Snowflake Cortex AI in private preview. The integration lets developers invoke GPT-5.4’s reasoning, coding, and multimodal capabilities through standard SQL queries and the Cortex REST API, with data never leaving the Snowflake perimeter.
This deal got overshadowed by the OpenClaw acquisition and GTC 2026 headlines, but its enterprise distribution implications may be more immediately consequential for OpenAI’s revenue.
How It Works
The traditional enterprise AI workflow requires extracting data from a warehouse, sending it to an external model API, and piping results back. Snowflake’s integration eliminates that round trip. GPT-5.4 runs as a native function inside the Snowflake environment, accessible via AI_COMPLETE in SQL:

For Python-native teams, the Cortex REST API accepts the standard OpenAI SDK by pointing the base_url to a Snowflake endpoint. Developers can use the same openai Python package they already know; they just swap the API key and base URL.
The model is available across Cortex AI Functions, the Cortex REST API, and will extend to Cortex Code (Snowflake’s AI coding agent) and Snowflake Intelligence (their natural-language query product) in the near term.
Why This Matters for Distribution
Snowflake reported over 10,000 enterprise customers as of its fiscal Q3 2025 earnings. Every one of them already has data, security policies, and access controls configured inside the Snowflake perimeter. By embedding GPT-5.4 there, OpenAI skips the hardest part of enterprise sales: getting past the security review.
The “data gravity” architecture means the model goes to the data rather than the reverse. Snowflake advertises a 99.99% uptime SLA for the integration, compared to the variable reliability of public OpenAI API endpoints. For regulated industries like finance and healthcare, “data never leaves the perimeter” is the sentence that gets past compliance.
The Microsoft Angle
This partnership also signals OpenAI’s increasing independence from Microsoft as its sole enterprise distribution channel. Following the restructured Microsoft-OpenAI agreement in early 2025, OpenAI gained more freedom to pursue direct commercial integrations. Snowflake gives OpenAI access to thousands of large enterprises that may not run their AI workloads through Azure.
Microsoft still holds the broadest enterprise distribution through Copilot and Azure OpenAI Service. But Snowflake’s integration demonstrates that OpenAI is building redundant go-to-market paths. If your data already lives in Snowflake, you no longer need Azure as an intermediary to access GPT-5.4.
What This Changes for Agent Frameworks
The most interesting downstream effect: if GPT-5.4 can be invoked via SQL inside a data warehouse, does the enterprise need orchestration frameworks like LangChain, AutoGen, or CrewAI for data-centric workflows? Snowflake Intelligence already provides natural-language querying with governance guardrails. Cortex Code handles code generation. The reasoning layer is now native.
For workflows that live entirely within structured enterprise data, Snowflake’s integration may reduce the need for external agent frameworks to zero. For workflows that span multiple systems, APIs, and unstructured data, orchestration frameworks remain necessary. The question is how many enterprise use cases fall into each bucket.
The $200 million price tag suggests both companies expect the answer to favor the first category.
