Shanghai Droi Technology, a Chinese OS developer whose FreemeOS platform runs on over 200 million devices globally, launched DroiClaw on July 23. The operating system eliminates the app grid entirely, positioning AI agents as the primary interface between users and device functionality, according to Dataconomy.

How It Works

In a conventional mobile OS, AI features sit inside individual applications. DroiClaw inverts that model. Intelligence is embedded at the infrastructure layer, giving agents access to coordinate tasks across the entire system rather than operating within isolated app silos.

Users describe what they want in natural language. DroiClaw breaks the request into steps, then autonomously coordinates the functions and services required for execution. The system supports multimodal input (text, files, images) and includes a library of installable skills that can be customized or built from scratch. DroiClaw tracks which skills a user relies on most frequently and prioritizes those in future interactions.

Hybrid Architecture and Governance

The OS runs a hybrid architecture combining on-device models with cloud-based large language models. Cloud models handle advanced capabilities: multimodal interactions, complex reasoning, scheduled tasks, and skill execution. When network access drops or cloud credits run out, the system falls back to a local model for basic question-and-answer functions, per Dataconomy.

DroiClaw’s governance layer includes mandatory user authorization before sensitive operations, operational permission management, and controllable execution of automated tasks. The system is also integrating layered data protection and local processing for privacy-sensitive information.

Pricing and Ecosystem

First-generation smartphones running DroiClaw are priced at approximately RMB 1,099 (roughly $150 USD). The system is hardware-neutral, built to support different device manufacturers, hardware platforms, and service providers. It also allows switching between different AI models, including custom deployments.

The OpenClaw integration is notable. Dataconomy reports that DroiClaw’s flexibility “could be further accelerated through partnerships across the broader open AI-agent ecosystem, such as OpenClaw.” This positions agent-framework interoperability as a table-stakes feature for consumer device manufacturers.

The Hardware Race for Agent Interfaces

Shanghai Droi Technology, founded in 2008, claims more than 1,000 hardware and software ecosystem partners serving markets across Europe, Russia, India, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. DroiClaw builds on the company’s established FreemeOS infrastructure.

The launch arrives alongside a broader wave of agent-native hardware. Autonomous shipped its Intern 2 device this week (a $249-$299 pyramid running OpenClaw or Hermes). The pattern is clear: Chinese device manufacturers are moving to agent-native hardware at mass-market price points before Western incumbents have shipped comparable products. At $150 per device, DroiClaw undercuts even the cheapest agent hardware coming from US startups.
