IBM and Google Cloud announced a strategic partnership on June 4 to deploy AI agents across enterprise verticals through a new Google Cloud Practice, according to IBM’s newsroom. The practice combines thousands of Google Cloud-certified IBM consultants with Google’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. Both companies describe it as a “multi-billion-dollar opportunity.”
IBM is building a portfolio of industry-specific AI agents on its IBM Consulting Advantage platform, optimized for Gemini Enterprise. Target verticals include banking, government, retail, telecommunications, energy, security, insurance, and life sciences, according to CRN.
“Enterprises are facing one of the most complex modernization cycles in decades,” said Mohamad Ali, SVP and Head of IBM Consulting, in the IBM press release. “By expanding our work with Google Cloud, we’re giving clients a clearer and more reliable path to scale AI across their business.”
Kevin Ichhpurani, President of Google Cloud’s Global Partner Ecosystem, said the partnership “significantly expands the pool of expert Google Cloud consultants in the market to meet surging demand for AI,” per the IBM release.
What the Practice Covers
The partnership focuses on five priority areas, per the IBM release: production-ready AI deployment (not pilots) using Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and BigQuery, industry-specific agent solutions, cybersecurity modernization, hybrid cloud modernization (including Red Hat OpenShift now available directly in Google Cloud Console), and integration of Gemini with IBM watsonx Orchestrate for decision automation.
The companies pointed to prior joint work with Airbus, where IBM consultants and Google Cloud helped transition two aerospace businesses into independent operations in under 18 months by updating more than 100 critical systems.
PwC’s Patrick Pugh, who leads the firm’s Google Cloud alliance, told CRN: “The pilot and experimentation phase is somewhat over, so now we really are getting into the time of, ‘How do you find the technology, the metrics, the measurements to drive true outcomes and really change companies?’”
The Enterprise Agent Distribution Race
The partnership is the latest move in a consolidating enterprise agent market. Microsoft launched its Agent Control Specification and Scout agent at Build 2026. Salesforce shipped its Orchestration Density framework for Agentforce. OpenAI launched six role-specific Codex plugins targeting finance and banking. Google and IBM are betting that the distribution bottleneck for enterprise agents is not the model layer but the consulting and deployment layer, where IBM’s thousands of certified consultants and industry-specific templates give Gemini a channel advantage that model benchmarks alone cannot provide.
