LINEYahoo Merges Two AI Assistants Into ‘Agent i,’ Targeting 200 Million Users Across Japan’s Largest Platforms
LINEYahoo Corp. launched Agent i on April 20, consolidating its separate Yahoo! JAPAN AI Assistant and LINE AI products into a single AI agent brand accessible from both platforms. The service reaches LINE’s 200 million monthly active users alongside Yahoo! JAPAN’s search and e-commerce audience through a one-tap icon, making it the largest platform-native AI agent deployment in Asia-Pacific by immediate user reach, according to IBTimes JP.
Seven Agents at Launch
Agent i launches with seven domain-specific agents covering shopping, travel planning, weather, automotive, interpersonal advice, work tasks, and recipes, per IT Business Today. The shopping agent recommends products and curates purpose-built bundles based on learned user preferences. The travel agent generates sightseeing itineraries. The weather agent connects to Yahoo! Weather data.
The system draws on proprietary data from more than 100 LINEYahoo services and information from over one million businesses registered on LINE Official Accounts, according to IBTimes JP.
The June Upgrade: Memory and Task Execution
The current version handles information retrieval only. The more consequential update comes around June 2026, when LINEYahoo plans to add two capabilities that separate agents from chatbots: persistent memory (retaining individual user preferences across sessions) and task execution (completing multi-step processes like bookings, purchases, and scheduling on the user’s behalf), according to both IBTimes JP and IT Business Today.
Additional domain agents scheduled for June include finance (real-time stock visualization and trading timing support), recipe suggestions from photographed refrigerator contents, event discovery by location, and a Yahoo! Comment Summary agent that aggregates public sentiment on trending news.
Enterprise Play: Agent i Biz in August
LINEYahoo will roll out LINE OA AI Mode from summer 2026, allowing any business with a LINE Official Account to build a customized AI agent without technical expertise, per IT Business Today. A separate enterprise product, Agent i Biz, is slated for August 2026, targeting end-to-end support from strategic planning through operational execution within organizations.
Platform Distribution as Competitive Advantage
LINEYahoo, formed through the 2023 merger of Z Holdings’ operating entities under SoftBank Group, holds a position that pure-play AI startups cannot easily replicate: simultaneous distribution across Japan’s dominant messaging platform and its largest domestic search engine. As IBTimes JP noted, the ability to push Agent i to both surfaces at once gives LINEYahoo a reach advantage that would take years for standalone AI companies to build organically in the Japanese market.
The open question is execution. Memory and task execution are the features that distinguish an agent from a search wrapper, and LINEYahoo has not disclosed user acquisition targets or monetization timelines. The company has two months to deliver on the June roadmap before enterprise customers make platform decisions for Agent i Biz.
