OpenAI told employees on Friday that co-founder and president Greg Brockman will permanently lead all product strategy, merging ChatGPT, Codex, and the developer API into one unified organization. The restructuring collapses three previously independent product lines into a single team focused on what Brockman called “the agentic future,” according to WIRED.
The Structural Change
“We’re consolidating our product efforts to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future, to win across both consumer and enterprise,” Brockman wrote in a memo to staff seen by WIRED. In a separate line reported by TechTimes, he added that OpenAI would “invest in a single agentic platform and merge ChatGPT and Codex into one unified agentic experience for all.”
Until Friday, ChatGPT pursued consumer reach, Codex served developers seeking AI-assisted coding, and the API monetized the broader ecosystem. Each had its own leadership, roadmap, and competitive positioning. The collapse into one team is a structural admission that the separation had become unwieldy at OpenAI’s current scale of 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users.
Leadership Moves
Thibault Sottiaux, the engineer who built Codex into one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing products, now leads the combined core product and platform teams across consumer, enterprise, and developer surfaces. Nick Turley, who oversaw ChatGPT’s expansion since launch, moves to a role focused on enterprise products. Ashley Alexander, a former VP of Instagram who has been leading OpenAI’s health products, takes over the consumer product unit, per WIRED.
Brockman had been serving in the role on an interim basis since early April, when Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, took medical leave. The change is now permanent. OpenAI told WIRED that Simo remains on medical leave and that she worked directly with Brockman on these organizational changes.
Timing and Competitive Context
The announcement lands three days before Google I/O 2026 opens on May 19, where agentic coding and Gemini updates headline the agenda. The competitive pressure is documented: Google’s Gemini has grown its share of AI web traffic from 5.7% to 21.5% over the past twelve months, while ChatGPT declined from 86.7% to 64.5% over the same period, according to Similarweb data cited by TechTimes. Anthropic’s Claude Code has also been gaining developer share.
The restructuring also follows significant leadership turnover. In April alone, OpenAI lost Kevin Weil (former CPO), Bill Peebles (Sora lead), and Srinivas Narayanan (enterprise CTO), as reported by WIRED.
The Super App Endgame
The reorganization formalizes a project first reported in March: a desktop “super app” combining ChatGPT, Codex, and OpenAI’s Atlas web browser into a single application capable of executing multi-step agentic tasks. No launch date has been announced. For the millions of developers currently building on the Codex platform, OpenAI has not specified what the product integration means for existing API customers or provided continuity guarantees, according to TechTimes.
The clearest explanation for the timing: OpenAI is targeting a public listing as early as Q4 2026, with an $852 billion post-money valuation from its most recent round. A single unified product story is easier to sell to public market investors than three overlapping product lines with divergent roadmaps.
