OpenAI launched the Codex Micro on July 18, a $230 mechanical keypad developed in collaboration with Work Louder and sold through OpenAI’s Supply Co. storefront. The device is OpenAI’s first consumer hardware product and integrates directly with its Codex coding agent.
Hardware Specs and Inputs
The keypad packs 13 mechanical switches, a touch sensor, a rotary encoder, and a planar joystick into a CNC-machined polycarbonate and aluminum body. The rotary dial controls Codex’s reasoning level in real time, letting developers toggle between lightweight completions and deep multi-step computation without leaving their keyboard workflow.
Each key supports RGB lighting that reflects live agent status: idle, thinking, complete, needs input, or error. According to Work Louder’s product page, the joystick maps to four preset or custom Codex skills (reviewing PRs, debugging, refactoring), while command keys handle accept, reject, push-to-talk, and new chat actions.
The device ships with 32 custom icon keycaps and 11 solid color caps for remapping. Connectivity is Bluetooth and USB-C, compatible with Mac and Windows. Software configuration happens inside Codex itself or through Work Louder’s Input app, with six programmable layers for workflow grouping.
Limited Run, Already Sold Out
OpenAI described the Codex Micro as a limited-run project, according to gHacks. The company has not committed to restocks, international shipping details, or long-term software support. As of publication, the OpenAI Supply Co. page lists the device as “Out of stock” in both clicky and silent switch variants.
Pricing drew mixed reactions. At $230, the Codex Micro competes with Elgato’s Stream Deck and general-purpose macro keypads that offer similar physical input customization at lower price points, though without the native Codex integration or reasoning-level hardware dial.
Separate from the Jony Ive Project
The Codex Micro is not the screen-free AI device OpenAI is developing with former Apple designer Jony Ive. That project, announced last year, involves multiple cameras and sensors for spatial awareness and remains unreleased. The Codex Micro was developed entirely with Work Louder and appears outside the scope of Apple’s ongoing trade secrets lawsuit against former employees now working at OpenAI.
The Hardware Bet for Agent Interfaces
The launch signals OpenAI’s interest in whether physical interfaces can reduce context-switching overhead for developers who spend hours inside agent-driven coding workflows. The reasoning dial is the standout design choice: a hardware control for a parameter that currently lives in dropdown menus and API calls. If agent interactions become frequent enough, the argument goes, tactile shortcuts may outperform software-only controls on speed and cognitive load.
Whether that thesis justifies a limited-run $230 peripheral or a permanent product line remains an open question. OpenAI isn’t saying.
