OpenAI has promoted Uday Ruddaraju to CTO of Compute, a new C-suite role that consolidates infrastructure leadership under a single executive as the company races to scale its compute footprint, according to the Times of India.
Ruddaraju joined OpenAI a year ago from Elon Musk’s xAI, where he served as Head of Infrastructure Engineering and helped build the Colossus supercomputer.
First Year at OpenAI
In a public announcement quoted by the Times of India, Ruddaraju said his Compute team “worked relentlessly to bring capacity online quickly and reliably, while doing the deep systems across compute, network and storage, and ML work needed to train frontier models like GPT-5.6.”
He described the role ahead as building “the world’s largest compute footprint so frontier AI can reach everyone and every workflow,” covering large-scale distributed systems, hardware, manufacturing, and data center construction spanning civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering.
The Compute Leadership Pattern
The promotion follows a pattern across frontier labs of elevating infrastructure leadership to C-suite level. As model training runs require increasingly massive compute clusters and inference demand scales with agent deployment, the operational complexity of AI infrastructure has become a strategic differentiator rather than a background function.
OpenAI’s compute buildout is happening alongside Alphabet’s $80 billion infrastructure capital raise announced this week and Anthropic’s reported $10 billion compute lease negotiations with Meta. The creation of a dedicated CTO of Compute role signals that OpenAI views infrastructure execution as a competitive bottleneck worth C-level attention.
Ruddaraju’s career path from eBay (2013-2018) through Robinhood to xAI and now OpenAI tracks the migration of top infrastructure talent toward frontier AI companies, where the engineering challenges of building and operating multi-billion-dollar compute clusters have become the industry’s most sought-after skillset.
