OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told employees in an internal meeting on Wednesday that annualized recurring revenue in July exceeded the company’s entire second quarter revenue total. “And Q2 was no slouch,” Friar said, according to a partial transcript reviewed by CNBC.
Growth Drivers: GPT-5.6, ChatGPT Work, and Codex
Friar and board chair Bret Taylor attributed the acceleration to three products: the GPT-5.6 model series, ChatGPT Work (OpenAI’s enterprise agent), and growing adoption of Codex, its AI coding tool, according to CNBC.
The revenue update amounts to an internal morale exercise. OpenAI faces pressure from multiple directions: Anthropic surpassed it by valuation earlier this year, cheaper open-source models from China (including Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3) are closing performance gaps on benchmarks, and the company needs to justify an $852 billion valuation ahead of a potentially massive IPO.
The Competitive Context
The numbers arrive against a specific competitive backdrop. Anthropic reported in May that its revenue run rate topped $47 billion, up from roughly $10 billion for all of 2025, fueled largely by Claude Code’s developer adoption, per CNBC. The Information reported in March that OpenAI had recently crossed $25 billion in annualized revenue.
Taylor acknowledged the competitive pressure directly. He told employees that Anthropic had a strong start to the year and that OpenAI had to play catch-up in the coding market, but said Codex’s growth trajectory was encouraging, according to CNBC.
Infrastructure Spending vs. Revenue
The revenue acceleration sits alongside infrastructure commitments that dwarf current earnings. OpenAI told investors in February it plans to target roughly $600 billion in total compute spending by 2030. It is currently in discussions with Nvidia about a backstop of up to $250 billion to fund a massive new AI data center in Ohio, per CNBC.
Whether July’s acceleration reflects durable enterprise adoption or a one-time bump from new product launches will determine whether the $852 billion valuation holds. For agent builders on OpenAI’s platform, the spending trajectory signals continued investment in infrastructure, but also a company that needs revenue growth to outpace capital commitments that are scaling faster than income.
