Virgin Voyages unveiled Rovey at Google Cloud Next in Las Vegas on April 22, an AI crew assistant built on Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Gemini models, and BigQuery. The company calls it the cruise industry’s first AI crew assistant, designed to guide passengers from initial discovery through booking completion.
What Rovey Does
Rovey recommends itineraries based on travel style, pace, and interests. It handles shore excursion suggestions, cabin category comparisons, dining options, and packing advice. The system operates as a decision-support tool for what Virgin Voyages describes as a “high-consideration purchase,” providing context-aware recommendations rather than keyword-matched FAQ responses, according to FTN News.
Virgin Voyages CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu said the goal is creating “a sense of belonging before a Sailor ever steps on board,” per FTN News. Sam Sebastian, VP of North America Regions at Google Cloud, said the collaboration aims to “mitigate booking friction” and “deliver personalized travel recommendations at scale.”
Project Ruby Roadmap
Rovey is the first of seven planned AI releases under Project Ruby, Virgin Voyages’ broader AI platform co-developed with Google Cloud. Each release targets a distinct friction point across the passenger experience from discovery through the voyage itself, on a rolling cadence, according to Cruise Industry News. Virgin has not disclosed timelines for the remaining six releases.
Travel as an Agent Vertical
Rovey joins a growing pattern of consumer-facing agent deployments in travel and hospitality. The implementation is notable for its branding approach: rather than deploying a generic chatbot, Virgin gave the agent a name, personality, and crew member framing that aligns with the brand. It also reflects Google Cloud’s Cloud Next strategy of showcasing vertical-specific agent deployments built on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, alongside announcements from Home Depot, Salesforce, and other enterprise customers this week.
Rovey is coming soon to VirginVoyages.com. No specific launch date has been announced.
